Open Tabs

Here are some tabs I have open that I’ll sort through and list and write about—

((I never know when to post one of these posts…What is to be their structure? It’s so loose. And there’s so many open tabs to get through today. I guess I’m thinking of when D. Berman would post links, or even before that, back in the “glory” days of the Blogsfeare…that kind of thing…Should I post them every so often, or limit the number of them? There’s more to link to than there’s ever time, and “nobody reads” it anyhow. I suppose I’m thinking of a younger me, sitting at their work computer (a G3 tower, and one of those big Apple CRTs for a monitor). Kill some time while you drink your coffee; may as well click on some links, read some stuff. Who knows what might blow your mind or change your life or distract you or the opposite of distract you. Slot machine or wander in the forest or browse.))

  • Do Bad Reviews Kill Companies?

  • I was thinking of this in re: the subjects of Taste and Judgment, Honesty and Truth, Team Comics, etc. and the ecosystems of commodities and so on, and blessings upon the Reviewer who says “I don’t have any duty to anything—the companies whose products I cover—my only duty is to my readers.” But what if the reviewer is popular enough to have a company, and to pay for the streams they have to carry ads, and so on? What if they want to be friends with the Makers? Work together? They are already a publisher, a gatekeeper, a tastemaker. The market incentives are usually bad and irresistible, and making decisions about money and integrity, etc. Bite the hand… to be honest? Being poor is fun.

  • I like this substack, it’s earnest and thorough and smart, even when I disagree It seems set up to be disagreed with in a workable way. This one has interesting comments, a lot to think about. It’s a list of “Things That Don’t Work” according to the writer. I appreciate putting cards down, and showing the work (I’m too disorganizized and etc.)

THERE ARE NO MASTER RACES

“There are NO MASTER RACES!” A comic I had not seen before.

The Art and History of Lettering in Comics

By March 2023, more than four years since I had begun, I had lost confidence my book would ever come out from Abrams, and I decided to publish it myself on my blog. Over the next ten months I converted my manuscript to a series of blog articles. At the same time, with no restrictions on length or number of images (rights and permissions were not an issue since I make no income from my blog), I expanded most of the material, added new images and research (with help from Alex Jay), and wrote quite a few completely new articles to fill out areas I had previously skimmed over to save space. In the end, I had 75 blog articles that would make up the bulk of my online book.

Notions of the Sacred

-

“sacrilege” gets autocorrected by a computer, which is using a language model, as “sacrifice” amidst snorting at “humanities-oriented” people who “cherish the mystery and the ineffable essential nature of human thought and language.”

The Way is Shut

I’ve been enjoying listening to the podcasts and podcast guest appearances of Benjamin Studebaker, political theorist and Hoosier. You can find links at his blog here. I started with his appearance on Bungacast and then took notice enough to follow him to all of these other places.

Subscribe to "F" in 2024

“NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO…”

Here’s a Limited Time offer (?) for January and February.

Subscribe for 2024 directly from the FSHOP

Are you a subscriber? Wanna try it? Wanna come back, but avoid all the Patreon packaging?

Remember, I don’t care either way, so you may as well do it!

Subscribers get: e-zines most months, all print zines I make during the subscription (approx. 5/year), plus anything I self-publish. You also get bonus stuff like prints or zines that I only make for subscribers.

some of what went out in the mail in 2023

There is a ton of unpublished content in these “F” electronic zines…on the other hand maybe for a good reason: it’s not good? You decide!

The higher level subscribers (currently only available through Patreon) also have received custom drawings, studio detritus, and get first “crack” anytime I get around to selling new “original art”. (secret link for upcoming sales). Occasionally you also get discount codes you can apply to new items that appear in the FShop or Hidden Store.

OK So

you can subscribe on Patreon here: (LINK)

or

you can subscribe directly from me here (RECOMMENDED) (LINK),
